See how we’ve made a difference.
“In 2014, I was diagnosed with Congestive Heart Failure, a condition that would change my life forever. The wait for approval from my insurance was agonizing—90 days of uncertainty and fear, while I made five separate trips to Philadelphia for consultations in just one year. Despite the challenges, I kept pushing forward, hoping for answers.
During this time, I was also diagnosed with cancer, adding to the already overwhelming burden. I faced the financial strain of countless appointments, with some reaching up to $6,900, all while making daily phone calls to coordinate care, reschedule, or appeal insurance decisions. Every call felt like a battle, but I refused to give up.
Three years later, I was told I needed a heart transplant. Today, I am four years post-surgery, living a life I thought I might never have. The journey was difficult—emotionally, financially, and physically—but the strength and resilience I found, even in the darkest moments, kept me going. This experience has opened my eyes to the importance of advocacy, support, and persistence in the face of a complex healthcare system.“
Carlos’s Story (RACC Scholarship Recipient)
Carlos was one of my ESL students, a 42-year-old from Puerto Rico who came to Reading determined to advance in life. After completing two ESL exams, he reached Level 3 and expressed interest in earning his CDL. During our sessions, he discovered that Jose was a Certified Recovery Specialist, which sparked a new dream for him — to follow that same path.
I helped Carlos secure a $1,000 scholarship from RACC, allowing him to take the Certified Recovery Specialist exam, which he passed with flying colors — a perfect 100%! Today, Carlos is employed in his field, grateful for the guidance and persistence that helped him achieve his dream.
Cindy’s Journey (Recovery Advocate from Colombia)
In July 2023, I met Cindy, a case manager from Colombia with deep experience supporting communities similar to Kensington, Philadelphia. After moving to Reading, she wanted to complete the 12-Step program and continue her mission of helping others recover.
I introduced her to Jose, who was already leading a 12-Step group, and together they built a strong partnership. Cindy completed the 12-Step program, passed the Certified Recovery Specialist practice exam at RACC, and is now pursuing full certification to become a Licensed Certified Recovery Specialist.
Paola’s Growth (Medical Professional & CRS Trainee)
Paola, a dedicated medical professional and primarily Spanish-speaking learner, faced the challenge of mastering English while preparing for the Certified Recovery Specialist program. Despite the language barrier, her determination was unmatched. She passed the practice exam with a perfect score and is now actively pursuing her Licensed Certified Recovery Specialist credential.
